The One to Watch: ‘Lost’ v ‘Heroes’

I must say the schedulers at Channel 6 seem like silly people. They happily advertise that they are the first station in Europe to show the second series of ‘Heroes’ however they are showing it tonight at 9.30, clashing with RTE 2’s airing of the first episode of the 4th series of ‘Lost’ at 10. The case seems to be that no one is watching Channel 6 with its mix of reruns and new American series failing to attract viewers. The reality is very few will actually be inconvenienced by this choice, able to watch the inevitable repeats of the shows and airings of ‘Lost’ elsewhere. It is of course a topic of conversation as to which show is best. I’ve seen each of the new episodes of ‘Heroes’ and of course watched the new episode of ‘Lost’. ‘Lost’ despite its criticisms, which are deserved, is a higher calibre show in my mind. ‘Heroes’ and the type of show it is, only exists because of the success of ‘Lost’ and its producers actively plug it as a show that aims to have long running arcs but stay well clear of frustrating us in the way ‘Lost’ does with its slow pace and muddled story. ‘Heroes’ as ‘Lost’ did is having a difficult second year, with fans unhappy with the direction of the show and what I think is best described as ‘dumbing down’ with episodes, characters and plots having little of the depth of Series 1. I am firmly more invested in ‘Lost’ and would describe it as my show whereas I enjoy ‘Heroes’ purely for its distraction. I hope it returns to form when the writers return to work. To date there are 11 new episodes in the can.

Watched Lost Saturday Evening after getting it Friday night. Savage. delighted its back. Also I will agree. Lost has more depth whereas Heroes is just a bit of fun on the side. But the two should never meet in discussion as Lost will win hands down. Roll on Cloverfield
