I had forgotten until reading this story about two men, lawyers, I met while in America who on behalf of a Palestinian lobby group based in the States were constructing a case suing the State of Israel for injustices done to the Palestinian people. Only one of the lawyers made his name public and worked on all elements of the case away from the firms office and he was subject to multiple death threats. A number of months after I came home I heard the case had collapsed with little detail as to what was probably inevitable. This story I’ve linked here describes well an incident at Heathrow in 2005 where an Israeli military official refused to disembark his plane, having been informed UK police were waiting with a warrant for his arrest, one successfully sought by lawyers hoping to take private legal action. The story points out a seemingly muddled legal situation was in fact crystal clear with the UK authorities entitled to enforce its laws on a plane landed on its soil and so too makes suggestions of political influence, concerns of the Jewish community in the UK and also how what probably seemed like an innocuous event could have turned violent considering who was on board. The situation acts as an interesting microcosm for the larger issues of the world view of Israel and her relations with other countries and interestingly points out how Israeli officials are reluctant to set foot on UK soil, for fear of the repercussions.
