Todays Independent has a Digital Age supplement, its lead story covering the implementation of an EU Directive come the end of March which will require the storage of information on all our internet activity, emailing and browsing for a minimum of 2 years. The article discussed the obvious implications for our privacy, the burden placed on the ISP industry to store this information and also points out that while we may innocently browse and have our details captured, there is software and the option of using a Non-EU ISP, which criminals are more than aware of which will simply allow them circumnavigate such monitoring. Claims from the Opposition that they will call for strenuous debate of this new law doesn’t offer much encouragement. The article also refers to this blog - Digital Rights Ireland, one I am giving some time to examing to understand the full extent of these changes, the blog is devoted to the protection of human rights and civil liberties in a digital age.
