Interesting post. Obama = Thatcher is in itself a radical idea, with the differences in their ideologies :) I was reading the synopsis of Clinton's and Obama's standpoints on various things, and they don't seem radically different. It seems to be his Kennedy-factor charisma that makes him seem so new and different in his ideas. I've heard too that Thatcher and Blair have great personal charisma. So maybe support for radicalism is a belief in a person or persons, and as you say the charm just wears off?
