Dick Cheney puts what I can only call an ‘ugly’ spin on this milestone in describing the US army as an all volunteer force, heralding Bush as the person carrying the biggest burden in the midst of this disaster. No word of course of the civilian cost to the people of Iraq. Read more here.

    I’d say it is a volunteer force, in the sense that people can choose to sign up for it. But since their salaries are obviously paid for by government, and their activities directed by same, I don’t really find that description very satisfying.
