Tibet and Ireland

For some reason reading the reaction to John Gormley’s comments on Tibet I thought of the Irish delegation to the 1919 peace conference. How they want to be heard but the wiliness not to annoy the British of the other nations hampered them (the fact that we sided with Germany probably didn’t help mattters). Anyway her is an interesting piece from the New York Times from 1919 that details some of it. And the efforts of people to get the American Government to row in on Irelands side.

John Gormley committed the two unforgivable offenses as I see it.

    1. He broke the number one rule in international relations by insulting one side of a dispute when there was a representative of that side in the same room. Its just not done John in civilised society let alone international politics.

    2. Secondly he put principles above money and in doing so risked making this country €40bn a year less well off.

People warned me that the Greens in power would be bad for the economy but that’s just ridiculous.
