The Guardian Arts Blog analyses the motivation and themes behind film making this decade so far, ending the piece with a list of the films it feels best defines the 00s - in date order, not by preference. I may update this post when I have appreciated the list fully and have more analysis to add, I do think however for all the charm of ‘Lost in Translation’ it hardly marks a benchmark in film. Fling accusations of snobbery all you like, why Borat is there is beyond me. The rest I don’t disagree with, though I’m not swayed by a feeling of euphoria of having lived through a great 8 years of movie making looking at the list. if you haven’t seen Cache (Hidden) rectify this as soon as possible. Along with ‘Eternal Sunshine’ it is my favourites of the 10. Here is the full list:
1. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)
2. City of God (2002)
3. Lost in Translation (2003)
4. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
5. Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)
6. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
7. Brokeback Mountain (2005)
8. Caché (2005)
9. Borat (2006)
10. There Will Be Blood (2008)

Simon you cynic!
I think that Fellowship should be in there instead of Return of the King as being the first it was the benchmark the rest of the trilogy had to follow! Its nitpicking i know, but damn it if i dont love a good nitpick!!
I also agree with Simon on Fahrenheit 911 and Will on Borat. Movies such as Pans Labyrinth or Lives of Others, for example, are far more worthy!
