There was a time when ice was just a subject for bad rap songs but with global warming melting of Arctic Ice is a major worry. But people are trying to resolve this problem. From Physorg

In order to help prevent the melting of Arctic ice, a process that has been occurring at alarming rates in recent years, which many scientists believe is due gradual global warming, a group of researchers have proposed a partial solution that is quite novel: covering select small regions with a layer of a porous polymer that would reflect sunlight and promote freezing, thereby reducing melting.

It is a very simple yet genius idea. Ice reflects about 70-90% of the light shined on it compared to waters 7-10% so as the ice breaks up the temperature of the earth is going to increase as less light will be reflected. What this does is increase the amount of light reflected.

Check out the Physorg report for more and pictures of the polymers in action.
