Bruce Springsteen, RDS gig
Two days later and I’m still buzzing from Bruce Springsteens RDS gig on Friday night – I turned to my mate after the very first song, describing Springsteen as a legend – imagine then 2 hours later, a concert of talented musicians, classic rock songs, great new material, a euphoric crowd and an outstanding performance by the leading man, we were on a high. Such energy and passion, filling out a 2 and a half hour set, a 7 song encore, great crowd interaction, smiles and intensity in equal measures on the faces of the band, they loved entertaining us as much as we loved watching them and they believed every word they sung. They could have been singing the songs, some of them 20 years old for the first time, they were so fresh. Its amazing, a song like ‘Born to Run’ or ‘Marys Place’, that you can have heard a hundred times and how it can take on life with such great delivery.

Springsteen owned the stage – I couldnt help but make a comparison with Indiana Jones – aged and passed a point where you think he should be able to bound across a stage, rotating guitars and instruments, he still trys, showing humour and personality and whats more you believe it. The man effectively performed a musical marathon, barely taking a breath to take in the enthused crowds reaction to one song, he launched into another song. The E Street Band around him importantly were his equals, talented, taking moments to shine as individuals adding to the experience. Any song I was unfamiliar I’ve made sure to seek out these past 2 days and his most recent album ‘Magic’ was playing on the i-pod in the car dropping our visitors for the weekend back to the airport – agreement all around the concert was fantastic and made for a great weekend. To get to such a gig on an annual basis, we all agreed, has the makings of a great ritual, though there was no doubting it would be a close to impossible task to better the experience.
