Luara Brady is in the Irish Times as their Leaving Cert exam person to tell us the trials and tribulations of exam life. Every year the Irish Times do this and every year it seems to be someone aiming for 7 A1’s from D4. Why not someone aiming to just pass from Clare. Is their experience not equally valid. Considering the predominance of rich educated people in media. But I guess they have to aim at their market and people who read the Irish Times are who would like to think that their offspring are going to aim at 7 A1’s

Anyway to the subject of her piece today. Getting her results.

The piece is all very tension packed.

The moment the page appeared, I slapped a hand over the right-hand-side of the screen so that I could expose each subject grade independently.

Irish was top of the list. An A2, not unexpected, identical to last year.

English, A1. Ditto. My heart was beating so fast it threatened to leap right out of my chest.

Geography, B1 - what?! The first anomaly in my expectations. I had been so certain of an A1 in that subject that this B1 seemed to leer at me in an almost offensive fashion.

I chose not to dwell too extensively on it, but moved on down the list.

Classical studies was next. Upon reading the subject title, my pounding heart constricted. Classical studies was my last exam, and the one I had felt most disappointed about. I thought I’d be lucky to scrape an A2.

I prised my fingers from the screen. A1. I must have gazed at those two little figures for 30 seconds.

This is all very good and she gets 565 well done her. (Other things she has said has got others like telling the world about her divine 600 Euro pair of shows). But seriously if you got your results do you want to read about someone gloating about getting A1’s and A2’s and disappointed by B1’s?
