One of the great untapped resources of this blog is Simons knowledge of music. The tunes below are a snap shot soundtrack to the 90s and when Simon suggested the list he described them as ’songs you forgot’. Turns out he was right, these tunes are from a time when I hadn’t begun drinking, I listened only to 2FM and I still remember putting down ‘74-75′ by The O’Connells as my favourite song in some sort of personal profile we designed in an IT class. I still have no idea what that song is about. The Cardigans I will always associate with my Junior Certificate as they provided the soundtrack for Baz Luhrmans ‘Romeo and Juliet’, our Shakespeare play that year. I’ve gone for ‘My Favourite Game’ rather than ‘Love Fool’ though. No. 1 is a song that I discovered is especially hard to sing in karaoke in recent years, that said, its my favourite of Simons choices.

This day last year I posted Joe Cockers ‘Summer in the City’ and do so again below. Added to it is ‘Gold’ from Spandau Ballet which some of the boys I was with on a stag last year began singing on a boat tour of Berlin. The song has been entrenched in my head ever since and I was devastated that the song wasn’t an option when doing some karaoke last weekend.
It encompasses the first and last breaths of a man and much of what passes in between, where aside from his condition he lives a life of questioning, struggle, joy and comfort that could characterise any life, fictional or otherwise. The grounds for presenting this tale to a medical journal are that our protagonist is born, with the dimensions of a baby and all the symptoms of an aged octogenarian. With each day, his body grows younger, at one point resembling the Brad Pitt we all know and for the remainder groundbreaking effects and makeup show Pitt

1. Sunday morning and I found this movie score popping into my head as an appropriate piece to ease me into the day. ‘A Beautiful Mind’ is considered one of those movies undeserving of its best picture award, the opening riffs to this segment of the score and the brass throughout though make it a lovely piece to listen to.

Embedding is conveniently disabled by someone who wants to make me even crankier this evening and has a still from ‘Twilight’ as their profile picture. Warped tastes aside they have posted the best version of the score – find it here.

2. Buying my awesome new TV at the weekend (42 inches people!), which due to the intervention of the gods of karma, inconvenience and making life difficult was a three day 3 tooth extraction procedure at Harvey Normans, this song from one of my favourite bands, that of Dave Matthews, was playing on a display model. Small mercies and all that.

Again, embedding is disabled. Why don’t these people know I want to compile a post of music related Youtube clips to offer an insight into my life? Anyway, the clip is here. Its a song to decompress to. As ever with Matthews, I have no idea what he’s singing about. It sounds good so I listen.

3. Finally, in a spiralling pattern of no co-operation this Tenacious D song, Tribute, cannot be embedded. I listened to it having read a little review of ‘The Masterworks, Vol. 2′ in Empire, which catalogues their world tour to promote their movie ‘The Pick of Destiny’. It sounds like a good watch. I dont know how to describe music but I want to say the song builds really well. Anyway, listen here.

The new Bond theme. Best way to describe it – an absolute mess but it begins to appeal on repeated listens. Decide for yourselves.

Did anyone else know ‘The Script’ were Irish? Their polished look had me presuming they were American. Their Dublin accents put an end to that last night while being interviewed on the Late Late. Well spoken guys, and genuine seeming. Their album is currently sitting atop the UK and Irish charts though as far as I’m aware that doesn’t mean what it used to in sales terms. Their new single has a silly title I can’t remember, and as I liked their first single more, I’ve posted it below. Its good to see this sort of diversity in the output of Irish musicians.

Embedding is disabled, but the link is here.

Finally, ‘Ramble On’ from Led Zeppelin, for no other reason that it seems a song to suit the mood of this surprisingly sunny Saturday. And yes I realise its not necessarily a positive song but music is subjective and all that lark, plus a great song is a great song.
