These are credit sequences as opposed to opening sequences or scenes. Credits must appear on screen. And as this list was arrived at in conjunction with Simon I have elected to not include Superman, for fear of rolling eyes. And the list:

6. A production of itself and setting a high musical standard with Buffalo Springfield, the sequence is a weapon assembly line from the Nicholas Cage movie ‘Lord of War’.

5. Seemingly this movie opened the minds of 1970s Hollywood and put pace to the what is viewed the richest decade of movie output from the States. Apologies for the quality. Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda ride into ‘Easy Rider’.

4. This movie made quite the impression on me as a young man, when to be honest I couldn’t even grasp the idea of what a male prostitute was, or why the world would need such a professional. Friday night, after the Late Late Show and ‘Midnight Cowboy’ comes on – ‘Everybodys Talkin’ again proving the importance of music to opening sequences and the movie opens and moves in a very grown up direction.

3. The only animated sequence of the list, this is a slinky stylish opener to suit the shooting style and themes of ‘Catch Me if You Can’.

2. John Travolta had not made Battlefield Earth, a world away from ‘Look Who’s Talkin’ – New York looks a gritty racially tense environment but the power of a good opening track and a weekend at the disco results in a huge commercial success and one of the best selling albums of all time.

1. Top of the list is a simple but potent sequence – smoky haze, opera, solitary figure, Scorsceses masterpiece.

Fairview Park in Dublin is home to a much vandalised statue, that of controversial figure Sean Russell. Chief of Staff for the IRA during the 1930s, and the leader of a bombing campaign as part of a declared war on the UK, the bulk of the vandalism is to display affront as his association with Nazi Germany. A newly renovated statue of Russell has in recent weeks been covered in grafitti and in the past few days had Nazi flags painted in its base. My list below is of statues, not necessarily controversial, but certainly notable ones. My main criteria is that I will channel Maximus arriving in Rome to be confronted with the Colloseum and wonder at how men can build such things. No. 3 is to make sure the list reflects a rounded appreciation.

6. Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro

Oddly this statue appears in the skyline of Verona in Baz Lurhman’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’. For those not living in a Shakesperean tragedy, it is a testament to the strong Christian

I became aware of Bill Hicks, an American stand-up comedian, through Simon and Tuathal. Now, I can take or leave stand-up comedy, I don’t need to pay someone to make witticisms from a stage about the mundanity of his life, and gets laughs for cursing. Hicks though makes smart observations. I can tell I would crumble to pieces in a conversation with him, my thoughts on things are so underdeveloped. Hicks passed away in 1994 at the young age of 32. Following the quotes, I’ve posted video clips below the break. Easily offended or dont like bad language, look away now.

6. Here is my final point. About drugs, about alcohol, about pornography and smoking and everything else. What business is it of yours what I do, read, buy, see, say, think, who I fuck, what I take into my body – as long as I do not harm another human being on this planet?

5. A lot of Christians wear crosses around their necks. You think when Jesus comes back he ever wants to see a fucking cross? It’s like going up to Jackie Onassis wearing a rifle pendant.

4. I don’t mean to sound bitter, cold, or cruel, but I am, so that’s how it comes out.

3. I’ve learned a lot about women. I think I’ve learned exactly how the fall of man occured in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden, and Adam said one day, “Wow, Eve, here we are, at one with nature, at one with God, we’ll never age, we’ll never die, and all our dreams come true the instant that we have them.” And Eve said, “Yeah… it’s just not enough is it?”

2. The worst kind of non-smokers are the ones that come up to you and cough. That’s pretty fucking cruel isn’t it? Do you go up to cripples and dance too?

1. Did you watch the flag burning thing? Wasn’t that great man? Boy everybody showed their true colours then didn’t they?….Scary… People just flipped, they reacted like The Supreme Court approved of flag burning, know what I mean?

” Does that mean we have to burn our flags?.. They said that we ha-”… NO NO NO NO NO NO, they didn’t say that. They said that if someone wanted to burn a flag, he perhaps doesn’t need to go to jail for a year…Pretty harsh on their part huh?

“They said we should bur-”…. They didn’t say that, they didn’t say that, they didn’t say that

“Does that mean I have to go and -”….NO NO NO NO NO NO NO… Listen, read , think, calm down, relax, SHUT THE FUCK UP

“Well I don’t get it..I don’t wanna burn my flag”….THEN DOOOOOOOOOOON’T.

People snapped, they were like “Hey buddy, my dad died for that flag”

“Really?…I bought mine…They sell ‘em in K-Mart…”

“yeah..He died in Korea for that flag”

“Wow, what a coincidence. Mine was made in Korea… the world is THAT big man…”

No-one, and I repeat NO-ONE has ever died for a flag. A flag is a piece of cloth, they might have died for freedom, which, by the way, is the freedom to….Burn the.. fucking flag you see??..Burning the flag doesn’t make freedom go away, it’s kinda like Free-dom ok?..ok.

And they’ve had 4 cases in this country’s 200 year history, so it’s not that big an issue. One of the hotter smokescreens they’ve put down the pipe. I don’t wanna burn a flag, but what business is it of mine if you do?

Is it my business if someone wants to..Is it?…NO

Is it my business what other people read or watch on TV? NO IT’S NOT…THANK YOU

You see, when we talk these things through, it becomes a little clearer doesn’t it? That’s called logic and it’ll help us all evolve and get on the fucking spaceships and get outta here.

One of the great untapped resources of this blog is Simons knowledge of music. The tunes below are a snap shot soundtrack to the 90s and when Simon suggested the list he described them as ’songs you forgot’. Turns out he was right, these tunes are from a time when I hadn’t begun drinking, I listened only to 2FM and I still remember putting down ‘74-75′ by The O’Connells as my favourite song in some sort of personal profile we designed in an IT class. I still have no idea what that song is about. The Cardigans I will always associate with my Junior Certificate as they provided the soundtrack for Baz Luhrmans ‘Romeo and Juliet’, our Shakespeare play that year. I’ve gone for ‘My Favourite Game’ rather than ‘Love Fool’ though. No. 1 is a song that I discovered is especially hard to sing in karaoke in recent years, that said, its my favourite of Simons choices.

6. The Cardigans, ‘My Favourite Game’

Rather than look to the words of poets, writers, religious leaders or political revolutionaries, this collection of wisdom, mantras, advice or instructions tailored to navigate whatever should cross your path, comes from where else but movies and TV. Pay heed. All the choices are effective, the sentiment of No.2 may not initially sit well with the tone of the other entries, but if you’ve seen the movie you’ll know it works.

6. On Ambition

Knowing where to set the parameters on how much you aim for in life is fundamental to feeling satisfied. We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to words of wisdom with this man.

“You tried your best and you failed miserably, the lesson is, never try”

Homer J. Simpson (The Simpsons, ‘Burns’ Heir’)

5. Laying Blame

To know how to deflect blame is key for never taking account. The quote below comes from a group of parents, wishing to blame a 3rd party rather than look to their parenting decisions when their children misbehave.

“Blame Canada”

Parents of South Park (South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut)

4. Forgiveness

Who better to look to for advice on forgiveness than an embittered ex.

“Some people say forgive and forget. Nah, I don’t know. I say forget about forgiving and just accept – and get the hell out of town”

Debi Newberry (Grosse Pointe Blank)

3. Disposing of a corpse

Professionals in discussion

Brick Top: “You’re always gonna have problems lifting a body in one piece. Apparently the best thing to do is cut up a corpse into six pieces and pile it all together”.
Sol: “Would someone mind telling me, who are ya?”
Brick Top: “And when you got your six pieces, you gotta get rid of them, because it’s no good leaving it in the deep freeze for your mum to discover, now is it? Then I hear the best thing to do is feed them to pigs. You got to starve the pigs for a few days, then the sight of a chopped-up body will look like curry to a pisshead. You gotta shave the heads of your victims, and pull the teeth out for the sake of the piggies’ digestion. You could do this afterwards, of course, but you don’t want to go sievin’ through pig shit, now do you? They will go through bone like butter. You need at least sixteen pigs to finish the job in one sitting, so be wary of any man who keeps a pig farm. They will go through a body that weighs 200 pounds in about eight minutes. That means that a single pig can consume two pounds of uncooked flesh every minute. Hence the expression, “as greedy as a pig”.”

Brick Top in conversation with Sol (‘Snatch‘)

2. On what other people think

This moment of honesty between two brothers, caught up in a drama surrounding orchid poaching and writers block is movie dialogue magic.

Charlie Kaufman: “There was this time in high school. I was watching you out the library window. You were talking to Sarah Marsh.”
Donald Kaufman: “Oh, God. I was so in love with her.”
Charlie Kaufman: “I know. And you were flirting with her. And she was being really sweet to you.”
Donald Kaufman: “I remember that.”
Charlie Kaufman: “Then, when you walked away, she started making fun of you with Kim Canetti. And it was like they were laughing at *me*. You didn’t know at all. You seemed so happy.”
Donald Kaufman: “I knew. I heard them.”
Charlie Kaufman: “How come you looked so happy?”
Donald Kaufman: “I loved Sarah, Charles. It was mine, that love. I owned it. Even Sarah didn’t have the right to take it away. I can love whoever I want.”
Charlie Kaufman: “But she thought you were pathetic.”
Donald Kaufman: “That was her business, not mine. You are what you love, not what loves you. That’s what I decided a long time ago.”
Donald Kaufman: “Whats up?”
Charlie Kaufman: “Thank you.”
Donald Kaufman: “For what?”

Charlie Kaufman in conversation with Donald Kaufman (‘Adaptation‘)

1. On making a comeback

The clip below offers a catch-all, every situation retort, that should be a standard in your repetoire of come backs.

“So’s your face”

(Dr. John Dorian, ‘Scrubs‘)

Oddly when I think of ’spin-offs’ I think of ‘dance-offs’ and imagine dance crews spinning to outdo their opponents. It is of course Wolverine weekend and as mixed reports reach us we list a selection of spin-offs from the world of TV and movies which have had varying degrees of success.

6. ‘Angel’, the spin-off show from ‘Buffy: The Vampire Slayer’ was as well received, if not actually better received and drew larger audiences that ‘Buffy’ ever did on the WB. The show nevertheless was cut short and ended on an apocalyptic cliff hanger. Despite jumping the shark with a messy love triangle, the show was revitalised with each new season, had darker themes than its parent show and still plenty of wit to match, including an episode where the cast are turned into puppets!

5. ‘Frasier’ was unique as a sit-com, it didn’t pander to an audience, didn’t go for cheap laughs, though it did of course have slapstick to match the intellect of some of its jokes and maintained an audience in a prime-time Thursday night slot. Frasier wrapped up the same year as Friends and the classiness of its final episode marked a consistent quality output over 10 years. The character of Frasier Crane also appeared on ‘Wings’ though his origins are of course as a patron of ‘Cheers’ in Boston. Why he was a customer in there I’ll never know.

Frasier: God, I hate lawyers.

Niles: Me, too. But they make wonderful patients. They have excellent health insurance and they never get better.

4. Never really spoken of in terms of being a spin-off, ‘The Simpsons’ looking very different from the HD quality characters currently on air, was of course originally a brief segment at the end of the Tracy Ullman, a variety show starring the British comediene which aired from 3 years from 1987. Ullman subsequently sued the producers of the show claiming she was entitled to profits, her show having served as a launching pad for the show. Her claim was rejected in court. An early success for the FOX network the show enjoys contract terms which prohibits interference from the network execs of a station which is otherwise notorious for trash.

3. ‘Law and Order’ has had a number of spin offs, most recently ‘Law and Order: UK’. Distinguished by the distinctive theme tunes and scene transitions. One of the characters, Det.
